Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients
  

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon
  • baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons butter
  • or shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 450°F.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; Mix well. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Add buttermilk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto floured surface; knead three or four times.
  • Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness; Cut with a 2 ½-inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes or until tops are golden.
